Counter steering is pushing your hand grip in the opposite direction of the way you want go.
That’s how you have to turn a motorcycle. At Countersteer.us, we are pushing to explore a new method of motorcycle training. We want to see lower fatality and morbidity rates for riders. We also want riders to be get more satisfaction from riding motorcycles.
The New Method
When the school is up and running, the program at Countersteer will expand on current motorcycle training techniques. In a realistic learning environment, we will use higher closure rates, and deep immersion in the process to teach risk management. Through repetition, we will improve the riderʼs perception and reaction times. We will develop a new skill set of exploring the limits of the machine in a controlled, dynamic learning environment. This dynamic environment is not a parking lot or race track. It’s on a road course engineered and built to challenge the rider.
Today, all 50 states require motorcycle riders to have endorsements on their driverʼs licenses. That endorsement lets us ride on the roads and highways of our country at posted speed limits — and sometimes beyond. Problem is, initial training and testing is limited to slow-speed handling in a parking lot. We following a pattern of cones, get some basic instruction about how motorcycles work, then take a test. Most riders easily complete the basic course work and obtain their endorsement. Once riders have the endorsement on their driverʼs license, they can go out and legally ride on the road with all the other licensed drivers. This coveted endorsement provides the new rider with a false sense of skill, which leading to high rates of injury and fatality for inexperienced riders.
Beyond the Endorsement
To be safe in all conditions on the road, the learning curve has to be extremely steep. Not many riders have the time to learn fast enough to get proficient. There is little time spent preparing the rider for the risks of the road during basic training. Countersteer plans to combine the best of military flight and law enforcement motorcycle training in our curriculum. This training can be readily adapted to teach risk mitigation concepts and skills development in one course.
Countersteer is dedicated to training motorcyclists to operate their machines safely and in control in all conditions on all roadways. The goal of the organization is to reduce morbid and fatal motorcycle accidents in a measurable way having a positive economic impact on society and its members. Countersteer, through our new method, will help riders enhance their skills, learn about risk management, and increase awareness of the operating environment. The training will be conducted on a specifically engineered closed-course. The course is designed to challenge a rider slightly beyond what could be encountered on the open road. Expert instructors challenge students, then give honest critique and correction as needed.
